Donald J. DeVries
Amy L. Horowitz
I am pleased to tell you a little about myself. I thoroughly enjoy practicing law and helping individuals and small businesses through difficult, stressful times.
I have practiced law in Santa Clara County for over thirty-four
years. I am proud that we enjoy the respect of countless clients
as well as the Santa Clara County Superior Court judges.
My competent staff and I work hard to establish and maintain a close, professional rapport with our clients. Many of our clients have told me they appreciate our personal, careful, and thorough approach to providing legal services.
The following are some representative legal matters that I have
handled. They are characteristic of the matters I help clients with
frequently:
| I represented a woman who was seriously injured in a tragic sailboat accident. After a six week jury trial, we recovered substantial damages from a sail boat manufacturer and an electronic beacon manufacturer for personal injury and product liability. |
| I represented four new-home buyers who came to see me when their contracts were wrongfully terminated by the developer. We were successful in immediately filing suit and obtaining a restraining order that prohibited the developer from selling my clients homes to other buyers. We then obtained a preliminary injunction and effectively won the suit. I feel great knowing my clients and their families are in their homes today. |
| I regularly represent spouses who are involved in divorces and custody disputes. Divorces are an especially difficult time with many important issues to tackle, such as dividing property, obtaining support, and working out custody issues. Frequently, major assets are involved. Aggressive, thorough action is a must. |
|
I also prepare living trusts, wills, durable power of attorneys,
and other estate planning documents. My clients and their
families have saved countless thousands of dollars in unnecessary
probate fees and expenses, and they have controlled the way
their property is distributed. I believe that an effective
estate plan is essential for everyone. We also have had several
court cases involving living trusts. |
I have earned a Recognition of Experience Certificate in the field
of family law from the California Trial Lawyers Association, and
have been a member of the State Bar of California since 1970 and
the U.S. Supreme Court since 1976. I am qualified to receive and
do receive referrals from the Santa Clara County Bar Association
Lawyer Referral Service.
I was born and raised in northwest Iowa, and received my bachelors degree in 1962 from the University of Iowa. After serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy for three years, I attended the University of Santa Clara School of Law and received my law degree in 1969. I later returned to Santa Clara School of Law as an Adjunct Professor for the Law Clinic.
I have been a resident of Almaden Valley for the past thirty-four
years. My wife Ruth is a retired first-grade teacher. We have two
sons, our eldest is an attorney in San Juan Bautista, CA. and the
other is a high school government and economics teacher in Santa
Barbara, CA.
My hobbies include writing a biweekly column for the Almaden Times,
past service on the Board of Directors for a national nonprofit
corporation, recreational swimming and exercising, family activities,
Corvettes,
and following the Oakland Raiders.
